Ujjain
This holy and historical city is 56 kms away from Indore, situated on eastern banks of Kshipra.It was governed by King Ashoka and later by the great legendary King Vikramaditya during whose time it was a great centre of learning. Ujjain is mentioned in Puranas as Avantika, Amravati, Kumuddhati, Pratikalpa, etc. The poet Kalidas was one of its illustrious sons and mentioned this city in his poems. The city has connections with many sages and learned personalities like Sandipani, Mahakatyayan, Bhas, Siddhasen, Diwakar, Bhartahari, Shudrak, Banbhatta, Shankaracharya, Vallabhacharya, etc. Following are the places, temples, etc. worth seeing in and around Ujjain. Every Twelve years, like Prayag & Nasik 'Kumbha Parva' takes place and lakhs of sages, pilgrims and devotees visit it and take dips in Kshipra river. Also, the Hindu, Vikram Samvat calander is also made on the basis of calculation of Vedh Shaala situated here which is known as Janter-Manter |
- Kshipra River Bank : Its various worth seeing vast 'Ghats' are regularly visited byt pilgrims and mentioned in Puranas as Amrit Sambhava.
- Jyotirlinga Mahakaleshwar : This is one of the most important of the tweleve 'Jyotirlingas' of the country.
- Shaiv Dharmasthal : These includes Temples of Lord Shiva and includes Mahakal Temple premises, Mangal Nath, Kal Bhairav, Vikrant Bhairav, Datta Akhada, etc.
- Shakti Dharmasthal : These Dharmasthal includes the temples of various Shaktis (Mataji) and includes Harsiddhi, Yogini, Garh Kalika, etc.
- Vaishnav Dharmasthal : These temples are of Lord Vishnu and their different Avtars which includes Gopal Temple, Ananta Narayan Temple, Gomati Kund, Ram-Janardan Mandir, etc.
