Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram is situated just 75 kms away from Chennai and considered as one of India's Seven Sacred cities. It is also known as Golden City of a thousand temples. It was once the capital of the Pallavas and then it was gradually in the hands of Chollas, Vijaynagar Kings, Muslims and the Britishers. The best of the temples were built by the Pallavas. Along with its unique temples.

Kanchipuram was the historical capital of the Pallavas. It was under the Pallavas from 6th to 8th century A.D and later became the citadel of Cholas, Vijayanagar Kings, the Muslim and the British. Due to its historical importance and it has been a centre of Tamil learning, cultural and religious background just because of glorious Dravidian heritage for centuries, religious and spiritual sentiments of pilgrims and still a curiosity of visitors.
Places to visit includes Kamakshi Amman Temple, known as the centre of all religious activities in the city and still Shankara Muth (Mutt) control this temple, facilitated along with an Art Gallery. Ekambaresh Temple is prior to 600 A.D. and considered as one of the ancient temple of India, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the largest temple of the city. Kailashanathar Temple built by Pallava rulers and one of the best example of Pllava Architechture in the region. Thus, visitors are more here rather than local pilgrims. Kumara Kottam temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga. The Vaishnavites have their own shrines which is also popular and famous as Varadaraja or Hastgiri Temple and the last to mention but not the least is Ulahalanda Perumal Temple which is having the deithy of Ulhalanda Perumal of nearabout 35 feet high.

By Air : Nearest airport is Chennai (75 kms).
By Rail : Kanchipuram Railway Station is connected to Chennai, Bangalore, Chengalpattu, and Tirupati.
By Road : Kanchipuran Bustand is well connected to other parts of India via Chennai.
