On full moon days in Shravana (July-Aug) it becomes about 6 ft. higher. It is situated at 4,175 m above the sea level on Glacial Valley. There is an ice Silva-linga here that changes size with the seasons, and also as the moon waxes and wanes it becomes bigger and smaller. On the full moon day the linga is about 6 ft high. Pilgrims have strong belief that Lord Siva first appeared on this day. There are other four or five ice formation inside the caves which is denoted as other God Ganesha, Goddess Parvati and God Bhairava. The cave opens in July and August on which registration is necessary rest of the time covered by snow.The Government of Jammu & Kashmir organizes Amarnath Yatra every year during the Shravan month (Jul-Aug) after analyzing the weather conditions. The dates are then announced by the Government. Before participate in the Yatra, one must confirm the dates and necessary instructions given by the Government time to time. The climate here is very uncertain as there may be rain / snowfall and the temperature may fall upto in minus. One must assure good health and proper checkups because there is hard trekking of about 14,500 feet from Pehalgaum. But you can visit through pony, Palakies, etc. Introduction of Helicopter Service by Government made it easier to people who cannot trek so hard or lack of time.
