Mountaineering Sports :

Mountaineering is the ultimate adventure sport where composition of strong will, spirit, the mind and the body works together. Achieving the victory to reach the pinnacle, only mountaineer understands the happiness after winning a challenge. In India , you can easily be thrilled after watching the heights in Ladakh, the Nun-Kun Massif, the Zanskar group, the central Himalayas and Arunachal Pradesh. You can enjoy this sport in four states of India- Jammu and Kashmir , Uttar Pradesh, Himachal and Sikkim .

Places for Mountaineering :

Some of the most daunting and challenging peaks in the world, are Nanda Devi (7800m), Kamet (7750m) and Dunagiri (7088m) in Himachal Pradesh. Hanuman Tibba 5932m, Manli and Shitidhar peaks (Beaskund Region). Feel the heights Lahaul area where peaks are upto 6500m. Also, you can have the mountaineering fun at Kufri, In Laddakh region Stock Kangri, Parcha Kangri and Kanglcha also. In State of Uttar Pradesh, We have options of Gangotri Valley (Shivling 6542m and Meru 6540m), Kedarnath 6937m, Bhaghrati 6853m which are also climbed by the hindu pilgrims. In the Sikkim Region you can feel the Power of nature by the Steady Sikkim Himalayas, Kanchenjunga, which is India's highest peak (28,146 ft), lies on the Sikkim-Nepal border But due to some problems, this peak is not right now available to mountaineer. Few peaks at Rathong (22,000 ft.) are open for mountaineers with special permissions. Other important peaks in Sikkim - Talung, Jonsong and Tent are all above 24,000 feet.

If you have interest and want to do mountaineering seriously you can have proper guidance and even courses on the following fully operational institutes. Here you can opt for Basic and Advances courses for a period of one month. Also, contact Government regarding subsidy in fees in these Institutes.

  1. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute At Darjeeling (West Bengal).
  2. The Nehru Institute Of Mountaineering At Uttar Pradesh (Uttar Pradesh) And
  3. The Institute Of Mountaineering And Allied Sports At Manali (Himachal Pradesh).
  4. Pahalgam.

So what are you waiting for just identify the peaks most suitable for one's requirements and capabilities before embarking on the great Himalayan adventure.

ESSENTIALS OF MOUNTAINEERING IN INDIA :
  1. Best Season : May to October.
  2. Prior booking is necessary for Foreign expeditions to book a peak along with a peak fee.
  3. Indian Apex Mountaineer Body : The Indian Mountaineering Foundation.
  4. Rescue Team : In association with Indian Air Force.
TIPS FOR MOUNTAINEERING BEGINNERS :
  1. Take the whole information about mountaineering from the concerned offices.
  2. Take the necessary brochure and important guidelines and information about the place you are approaching for this sport.
  3. You do not need any special equipment, all the technical stuff is handled by the Institute.
  4. ALWAYS HAVE a pair of cheap canvas shoes along with Professional shoes. This is a great help in rock climbing. Professional shoes available in the market.
  5. Always check all your equipment when you get it from the Institute and before using it.
  6. Collect exact weather information from reliable sources.
  7. Take full details about Indian Mountaineering Foundation and their rescue team before starting your task.
