Kathakali : Kathakali is one of the ancient theatre form and is in regular practice from the 17th century and is rooted in Hindu mythology. Kathakali is the classical dance-drama of Kerala, South India and it is a unique combination of literature, music, painting, acting and dance. The word Kathakali means Story Play. Every Kathakali must be an expert of both tandava (vigorous masculine style of styles). This dance basically for women is very difficult to perform that's why they can study Kathakali but not take part in the pure dance drama. In another words, It is a form of physical art with body and mind as well as a form of worship to the Almighty Divine Gods. In this dance presentation, dancers take various roles in performances traditionally based on themes from Hindu mythology, especially the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
Kathakali Make-up : The most interesting aspects of Kathakali is its unique make-up code. Different Make-ups for different Characters which are categorized according to their nature. Extremely angry or excessively evil characters wear predominantly red make-up and a flowing red beard same the good characters wear green make-up. Forest dwellers such as hunters do a predominantly black make-up base. Women and ascetics have lustrous, yellowish faces. |
| Kathakali Costume : The dancers wear large head dresses. The extraordinary costumes and make-up is used by the participants above the level of mere mortals which makes viewer to visit new world of wonders. |
| The Kathakali Orchestra :
The orchestra consists of two drums known as the chenda and the maddalam, along with cymbals and another percussion instrument, the ela taalam with two singers who provide the vocal accompaniment. The style of singing to singing is called Sopaanam.A traditional Kathakali performance begins in the evening and continues throughout the night, culminating at the auspicious hour of dawn, when Good finally conquers Evil. But now as the scenario has changed, we can feel a modern touch also and urban audiences can participate in this ritualistic theatre experience in the luxury of plush auditoriums in couple of hours. |
