Janamashtmi :
Janmashtami, is celebrated with Great devotion as the Birthday of Lord Krishna which lies in August/September months. The term “Janmashtami” is made up of two words ‘Janma” which means Birth and Ashtami which is a Tithi as per Indian Calender therefore the day comes on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadon, in the whole of north India. The festival is celebrated in Temples and homes both beautifully decorated and lightened. Many rituals are performed on these occasion. The most attractive feature of the celebrations are cribs & other decorations depicting stories of Lord Krishna's childhood. The Jhankis are made showing different facets of Lord Krishna's Life.
Major Celebrations:
Major Celebrations are in Mathura , the birthplace of Lord Krishna mainly Jhulanotsava, etc. The main celebrations are performed at the Dwarkadhish temple, Mathura in the form of Jhulanotsava and the Ghatas during the entire month of Shravan. On various places the ceremony of Dahi-Handi also takes place which is seen and participated by many devotees of this holy festival Janmashtami. |
