Ajatna Caves

Ajanta is situated just 99 km away from Aurangabad in the State of Maharashtra. It's a World Heritage Site. Ajanta constitutes in total 30 caves including some unfinished ones in it which represents basically in between 2nd Century BC to 6th Century AD. Five of these caves are prayer halls and the rest monasteries. It was first discovered by the party of British Army officers which were on a tiger hunt in 1819. These caves are a unique combination of architecture, sculpture and paintings. These caves were treated as a monsoon retreats for Buddhist monks. The incidents related to Buddha are shown in the paintings.
